Supermarket wines did good at the IWC.

 

Thirty supermarket own-brand wines have won gold medals in the International Wine Challenge.

 

Marks & Spencer picked up the most, with 13 gold medals across various styles including red, white, dessert wines, marsala and Port. Sainsbury’s collected six golds, and Tesco and Waitrose received five gold medals each for their own-label ranges. The Co-operative picked up two sparkling golds and an Extra Special Champagne from ASDA (available from June) which will retail for less than £20, picked up the only gold for the supermarket chain.

 

Thirteen of the gold medal wines retail for less than £10 and, according to the IWC, this highlights “the rise of excellent supermarket wines marking a shift in the consumer habits of discerning shoppers who want high quality and good value”.

Distell is to preview its wines for the Nederburg Auction at the London International Wine Fair.

 

The 39th Nederburg Auction, which centres around rare South African wines, is to feature 133 wines from 80 wineries – 24 fewer wines than in 2012 in a bid to “let the best wines stand out”.

 

Sarah Gandy, Distell international marketing manager for wine in the UK and Europe, said: “London International Wine Fair is a great platform to showcase a range of the wines which have been entered to the Nederburg Auction while all of the key industry players are under one roof.

 

“The event gives potential buyers a chance to taste the Nederburg wines and facilitates pre-auction bids. We will also have the Nederburg white winemaker, Wim Truter with us throughout the event to help raise the profile of Nederburg wines and the auction.”

 

Commenting on the Nederburg wines chosen by the selection panel, cellar master Razvan Macici said: “This is a healthy development in the evolution of the auction.  With the wider availability of exceptional quality wines globally through a variety of channels, it becomes essential to present auction bidders with options deemed truly original or unique and we are proud to be among those having such limited-edition wines to offer.

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has adopted new definitions of low-alcohol and de-alcoholized wines.

The move by the OIV comes amid a rise in the popularity of low-alcohol wines, with producers such as Skinnygirl targeting female consumers in particular. Other winemakers are seeking to reduce the high alcohol content of their more potent wines, created by factors such as better vineyard management and the picking of grapes later (and riper). Some can have alcohol levels of up to 17 percent. Alcohol reduction can also improve the taste balance of particular wines.

Alcohol is reduced or removed using techniques such as spinning cones and reverse osmosis. Conetech, a California-based company which specializes in “alcohol adjustment,” says it treats six million gallons of wine annually from around 600 clients. It also has plants in Chile, Spain, France and South Africa, with Australia soon to follow.

The difficulty is that the rules governing the use of alcohol-reduction technology vary worldwide.
